When we look at the drawing “Patru pești” for the first time by the artist Ștefan Câlția (b. 1942), it seems like we have in front of us an image of a dream. Our imaginary museum allows the symbolic elements to break in a familiar setting. The universe that formed on a piece of white paper makes us think of floating.
The motif of the fish is ubiquitous in the artist’s work and is also found in the signature. It means wealth, creativity, clearness, eternity and vital energy. The variety of the details reveals a gracious delicacy, each fish being a character who reminds of the artist’s childhood.
Without too much effort, the fish is floating surrounded by flowers, plants and special ornaments. The line is organic and spontaneous, unexpected and unpredictable. Thus, the floating fish watches in symbolic garments over everything around and creates a story at the line between tradition and fantasy.
