Handmade tiles for Monumentum Association

Ștefan Câlția, Vadim Crețu

800 lei

The painter Ştefan Câlţia, accompanied by the artist Vadim Creţu [his former student], made drawings on handmade fish-scale roof tiles in the workshop of Jozsef Bartha from Covasna, just as the tile makers used to do in the old days, inscribing the Feierabendzieglen (“end-of-work tiles”) with symbols, in preparation for the “Path in Transylvania” exhibition, in London, in 2022.

The proceeds from the sale of these tiles, which took place in 2022, will be used to support the educational program in Şona (the Blue project), based around a meeting of architecture and the other arts, and taking place over a period of 10 years, initiated by the Monumentum Association and the Ştefan Câlţia Foundation in partnership with the Şona Noastră village association.

Traditional Transylvanian roof tiles have a fundamental impact on the rural cultural landscape. The artisanship that goes into their creation is soon to be extinct, and the Monumentum Association has the permanent mission to raise awareness among local communities of the need for preservation, conservation and reuse/recycling of old roof tiles, which form such an integral part of the rural roofscape.
