Book Launch: The Use of Landscape
21.09.23
We're excited to announce the launching for the book called "The Use of Landscape - Utilizarea Peisajului". After 2 years of continued work and research, we are finally ready to share this amazing publication with you. Come join us on 21st of September at 6pm to find out more about the book and to see artworks specially made for this publication.
This book is born of the ongoing interest of Galeria Posibilă vis-a-vis landscape and natural space, as well as an endeavor to bring together different ways of thinking and analysis, as demonstrated through various curatorial and artistic projects from 2003 on.
Landscape forms part of the institutional practice developed over the years by the gallerist Matei Câlția through exhibitions and publications. At the same time, this book is also the result of a research project about the “use of landscape” carried out between 2020 and 2022 and involving a series of discussions.
These meetings, which took place online, were essential to the creation of this book; they consisted on the one hand of presentations by the participants and, on the other, open discussions of themes arising out of specific practices and concerns with respect to the use of landscape.
The participants in these sessions were: Bogdan Bordeianu (artist), Matei Câlția (gallerist), Diana Culescu (landscape engineer), Tibor Hartel (ecologist), Michael Höpfner (artist), Iosif Kiraly (artist), Alexandra Mereuți (artist), Olivia Mihălțianu (artist), Miruna Moldovan (architect), Ghenadie Popescu (artist), Iarina Tavă (architect), Oana Tănase (art historian and curator), and Elena Vlădăreanu (writer).
The Use of Landscape is an anthology of texts and works that while not seeking to solve any immediate or urgent problems provides us with a different way of reading landscape – whether we view it as a concept of contemporary art, as an explosion in the number of exhibitions and discourses in a political and legislative context, or as a place of recreation. It can be viewed as a break from the existing discourses and more as a collection of ideas, thoughts and personal and introspective views.
Next time you visit an exhibition or view a work of art which depicts a piece of land, a forest, a tree, a river, or urban setting, or which draws attention to the real problems and risks around us, you will be reminded of what you read in this book, the many implications of the subject, as well as how much its reality depends on the expansion and change, or adaptation, of the paradigm of thought. I’d like this book to be a conversation, one in which we sit down with artists and theoreticians and become aware things we have neglected to think about, with the aim of finding solutions or formulas for approaching the nature with which, and in which, we live together.
The publication is proofread and carefully revised together with Monica Dănilă.
